Streaming Media, Dating Push Apps Even Farther Toward Subscription Models

The subscription billing model made its way into the app space in a big way in 2015, according to a report from app analytics and research company App Annie. Video and music apps, strongholds of the subscription model, made big gains last year, the report said, as the popularity of streaming platforms from HBO, Showtime, Netflix and YouTube goosed in-app revenue based on subscriptions. Meanwhile, revenue from the top 10 music streaming apps including Spotify, Apple Music and Pandora rose by 120 percent. A surprising success was the introduction of a subscription option for Tinder.
“Dating apps are yet another example of the increasing popularity of subscription as a monetization opportunity,” the App Annie report said. “As consumers and developers continue to embrace this revenue model, we expect it to become an even more significant contributor to global app market growth.”
