Dec. 29, 2014

Starbucks, Square Part Ways on Mobile Payments When Square retires its Square Wallet app in favor of its new Square Order mobile payment solution, Starbucks, which has accepted Square Wallet payments since 2012, said it will not make the switch. Instead, the company said in published reports, Starbucks will develop its own mobile ordering system based on its popular mobile app. At the moment, Square will continue as the processor of card payments at Starbucks stores.

“Starbucks is not adopting Square Order in our stores,” a spokesperson for Starbucks told ReadWrite. “We opted to build our own mobile ordering solution, leveraging our own mobile app and world-class loyalty program.”

Starbucks introduced Mobile Order & Pay earlier this month in a pilot test in its Portland, Ore. Stores. The new app will enable users to order in advance of their visit and pay using the Starbucks app linked to their Starbucks prepaid card.
