Report: M-Commerce to Account for Bigger Percentage of Bigger Online Commerce Pie Consumers are spending more time shopping on their mobile devices with relatively little spending, but that will be changing as more retailers look for ways to make the online buying experience easier for merchants, according to a new report. While only 11.6 percent of the $303 billion spent online in 2014 came from mobile devices, m-commerce will account for more of a growing overall online pie in the next five years, the BI Intelligence report said. By 2020, m-commerce will account for 45 percent of overall online spending, which is predicted to increase to $632 billion during the same span.

The report also found that U.S. consumers are spending more time browsing mobile Websites than visiting retailer apps. BI Intelligence suggested retailers focus more on browser-based solutions because they attract a wider audience and that recently introduced mobile wallets like Apple Pay, Android Pay and others could have a hand in m-commerce gains.
