Report: Global Retail E-Commerce Hits $1.7 Trillion in 2015 Driven by Social, Omnichannel
July 16, 2015
Global retail e-commerce sales will hit $1.7 trillion this year, an increase of 17 percent from 2014, according to a new report from Juniper Research. The U.K.-based research firm said e-commerce growth will be buoyed by direct sales through social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter. The report said strategic partnerships between social sites and retailers, like one already signed between Twitter and Amazon, will extend the trend through the medium term.
The firm also predicted omnichannel efforts will contribute to sustained e-commerce growth, but advised that retailers choosing this strategy must be careful that their branding, messaging and shopper experience is consistent over each channel.
Dr. Windsor Holden, author of the Juniper report said: “The key is to ensure that consumers are allowed to choose their own path to purchase rather than have it effectively mandated by channel limitations.”
