PayPal to Launch in the Balkans in 2011

Nov. 18, 2010

PayPal, the world’s most popular alternative online payment system, will be available in Serbia, FYR Macedonia and Montenegro sometime in 2011. Serbia has long sought to offer the service to its citizens, but widespread Internet shopping abuses dating to the 1990’s in the region left eBay, PayPal’s corporate parent, with concerns, according to an advisor in the Balkan state’s Telecommunications and Information Society Ministry. It had been rumored that Serbian online shoppers would have access to PayPal by the end of this year, but the ministry advisor said once eBay had decided to launch the service in Macedonia and Montenegro, it delayed the launch in Serbia to coincide with the rest of the region.
