Online Payments Contribute to ACH Growth
April 11, 2013
The total number of ACH transactions grew 4.19 percent in 2012 to more than 21 billion and online ACH transactions increased more than 10 percent during the same time period, according to NACHA, the Herndon, Va.-based organization that manages the ACH network. The rise in online payments made via ACH was one of the main contributors to the overall growth of the network, along with an increase in native electronic payments (mainly direct deposit and direct payments via ACH) and the expanding use of ACH credit payments (primarily bill pay).
“This data clearly shows that consumers and businesses choose electronic payment options over paper checks,” said Janet O. Estep, president and CEO of NACHA. “Direct Deposits and Direct Payments via ACH provide the convenience, control, and flexibility that end users want. As end-user needs evolve, the ACH Network will continue to enable the innovation necessary to meet the changing needs of ACH Network participants.”
