  • EC Investigates EPC for Shutting Non-Banks Out of European E-Payments Scheme - Sept. 29, 2011
    The European Commission has launched a probe investigating whether the decision-making body for Europe’s banks is blocking non-bank providers from entering the online payments market. The European Payments Council and its major bank constituents are trying to set standards for e-payments throughout a proposed Single European Payments Area (SEPA), but the EC has received complaints that the EPC is locking out new entrants.
  • USDT Launches Chargeback Management System for CNP Merchants - Sept. 29, 2011
    Payments processor USDT Corporation has released a chargeback management system this week for online retailers. The New York City-based company said TransExam is a cloud-based, patent pending technology, licensed under an exclusive international licensing agreement between USDT and SignatureLink Inc. When a merchants using TransExam receive a retrieval request from a cardholder’s issuer, the system retrieves a single PDF re-presentment document that includes all pre- and post- authorization data, including the terms and conditions that were presented in the sales draft to the consumer at the time of the purchase.
  • Sightline Launches Pentagon for Casinos - Sept. 29, 2011
    Sightline Payments, a Las Vegas-based provider of payment technologies to the casino gaming industry, has signed an agreement with payment authentication company Adaptive Payments to use its Pentagon mobile payment application. The companies said the Pentagon mobile app uses Adaptive Payments’ five-factor, dual-channel technology to authenticate PIN debit transactions and also enables acceptance of secure signature-based credit and debit transactions via a mobile device, which they claim is an industry first.
  • PCI Compliance Firm Offers Tax Info Reporting to Processors - Sept. 29, 2011
    ControlScan, a PCI compliance and security solutions provider for small merchants and their acquirers, has entered into a referral partner agreement with Convey Compliance Systems, a provider of tax information reporting services and software, to offer tax information reporting solutions to merchant payment processors.
  • Report: 43% of Middle East Consumers Don’t Trust Online Payments - Sept. 26, 2011
    A Dubai-based research firm has found consumers in the Middle East are even more concerned with the security of online payments than consumers in the West. A survey conducted by Real Opinions found that only 6 percent of Internet users in the Middle East purchase online regularly and only one third have ever purchased something online. The research company said it attributes the low number of online shoppers to a lack of trust and a lack of ability.
  • Merchants Get Paid Faster for Direct Carrier Billing with New Program - Sept. 26, 2011
    PaymentOne Corporation, a San Jose, Calif.-based mobile payments provider, has introduced a program that guarantees disbursements to merchants in as fast as seven days. The company said the PayOne FastPay program ensures merchants that enable direct carrier billing for mobile purchases will significantly reduce the typical 60-90 day waiting period for payouts required by carriers and other mobile payment vendors.
  • Processor Comparison Site Launches Own Payment Gateway - Sept. 26, 2011
    FeeFighters, a comparison site for e-commerce merchants looking for low-cost card processing, recently launched its own payment gateway. The company said many of the merchants who used Chicago-based FeeFighters to choose a processor found that the best ones were often locked in by gateway providers. Merchants that choose Samurai as their gateway are not locked in to one processor, according to CEO Sean Harper.
  • NexTech Partners with Chase Paymentech to Streamline Payment Processing - Sept. 23, 2011
    NexTech, a Tampa, Fla.-based electronic medical records, practice management, billing and marketing software provider, signed a marketing agreement with e-commerce payments processor Chase Paymentech that will generate more effective collections of funds for NexTech users. NexTech said its clients will be able to check patients out quickly and conveniently while collecting debit and credit card payments directly through the NexTech software.
  • New ReD Fraud Alert Service Reduces Chargebacks by 43% in Trial - Sept. 23, 2011
    Anti-fraud technology provider Retail Decisions (ReD) has launched a new ReD Fraud Alert service that enables issuers and merchants to easily exchange vital information to fight fraud. The company said ReD Fraud Alert significantly reduces merchant chargebacks as well as the risk of consumers falling victim to fraud. Using information normally exclusive to the issuer, ReD creates a channel to enable its merchants to use a customer’s full account profile to decide whether to accept or reject a transaction for items with a high ticket price.
  • Mobcast Chooses Bango for Direct Carrier Billing - Sept. 23, 2011
    Bango, a U.K.-based mobile analytics and payment company, said it has agreed to provide Mobcast, a digital book software platform, with direct carrier billing for its mobile digital bookshop GoSpoken.com. The company said book buyers worldwide can now pay for eBooks and charge the purchase to their phone bill.
  • WorldPay Beefs Up Anti-Fraud Software - Sept. 21, 2011
    E-Commerce processor WorldPay recently launched an enhanced version of its risk management platform it says will enable merchants to take advantage of three new features to reduce fraud. The Atlanta-based company’s RiskGuardian platform now enables merchants to access a custom rules engine that sets risk parameters exactly where retailers want them. The platform also has added a transaction simulator where merchants can test the rules they have come up with before deploying live and a device identification network that generates a transaction risk score based on the device from which the order was placed.
  • Predictive Analytics Firm Secures $84 Million in New Funding - Sept. 21, 2011
    Opera Solutions, LLC, a New York City-based predictive analytics firm, received an $84 million minority investment led by Silver Lake Sumeru, with participation from Accel-KKR, Invus Financial Advisors, JGE Capital Management, and Tola Capital. The company said its technology has applications across many industries including anti-fraud for the e-commerce world.
  • Mobile Interactive Group Acquires Zaypay - Sept. 21, 2011
    Mobile Interactive Group (MIG) has acquired Dutch mobile payments startup Zaypay. MIG said it will continue to operate Zaypay as a standalone business and did not disclose financial terms of the agreement, other than to reveal that it was an all-cash deal. Zaypay enables third-party developers to process international micropayments through SMS, phone calls, in-app and other alternative payment methods.
  • Canadian Processor Launches Alternative Online Payments - Sept. 21, 2011
    Global payment solutions provider hyperWALLET has launched a low-cost online merchant payment processing service for organizations and their customers. The Vancouver, B.C.-based e-commerce processor said its Direct Pay online merchant payment option provides a secure, cost-effective complement to card payments by enabling customers to pay for products using funds from their bank account, an online e-wallet, or combination of both.
  • Report: Online Fraud Down but Avg. Value Up - Sept. 15, 2011
    For every $100 in fraudulent transactions, retailers incurred a “true” cost of $230, according to a new study commissioned by LexisNexis Risk Solutions. According to the study, conducted by California-based Javelin Strategy and Research, while fraud rates and the number of fraudulent transactions are in decline, the average dollar value of a completed fraudulent transaction is higher than last year, indicating the nature of transactions is becoming more severe.

    The Merchant Risk Council, a Seattle-based trade group focused on online payments, fraud and promoting secure e-commerce, will be conducting a conference in Berlin on Oct. 17-19. Conference organizers said the program—featuring speakers from Skype, Opodo, Microsoft, Symantec, Metaboli/Gametap, Rosetta Stone, and Addison Lee—will enable merchants in the European market to improve their bottom line and employ cutting edge techniques to prevent the latest fraud schemes.
  • Acculynk to Launch PIN-Debit System in Puerto Rico - Sept. 15, 2011
    Atlanta-based online security provider Acculynk this week entered into an agreement with EVERTEC Inc., a Puerto Rico-based diversified processing business in Puerto Rico and Latin America. Under the agreement, Acculynk said it will provide its PIN debit-enabling solution through EVERTEC’s ATH Network, to debit card holders in Puerto Rico who want to use their PIN-only debit cards for e-commerce.
  • Online Spending Still Increasing but Slow Economy Could Eventually Halt Growth - Sept. 12, 2011
    comScore Inc., the Reston, Va.-based measurement company recently released its Q2 2011 U.S. retail e-commerce sales estimates, which showed that online retail spending reached $37.5 billion for the quarter, up 14 percent versus year ago. It marked the seventh consecutive quarter of positive year-over-year growth and third consecutive quarter of double-digit growth rates. At some point, however, the continuing economic headwinds could present a problem for online sales, according to comScore Chairman Gian Fulgoni.
  • Amex Launches Virtual Gift Card for Online Shopping - Sept. 12, 2011
    American Express recently launched a digital version of its popular gift card specifically designed for e-commerce environments. The American Express eGift Card, to be purchased and used online, employs the same no-post-purchase fee structure featured in the traditional gift card program.
  • U.K. Firms to Bring Chip & PIN Home - Sept. 8, 2011
    Two U.K. companies this week said they will launch a product that will enable consumers to conduct Chip & PIN transactions from their homes, essentially turning CNP transactions into less risky card-present transactions. RFI Global Services Ltd, a unit of Underwriters Laboratories and Secure Electrans have signed a strategic agreement to obtain comprehensive regulatory, payment sector and security approval enabling Chip & PIN transactions for the home using the Secure Electrans HomePay system.
  • Text2Pay Launches In-App Mobile Payment Solution - Sept, 8, 2011
    New York City-based mobile payment provider Text2Pay recently launched an in-app payment solution for Android. The company said developers can integrate the Tap2Pay payment widget into applications with a simple API and Java library. Tap2Pay does not require credit card details, user login or third-party registration. Purchases are added to the user’s phone bill. When the user chooses what to buy, the developer makes one call to start the transaction and the user confirms this with a single tap on their mobile phone.
  • U.K. On-Demand Movie Service Chooses PayWizard - Sept. 8, 2011
    FilmFlex Movies, a London-based online movie service used by Film4oD, has added PayWizard as an online payment mechanism. The companies said the first deployment of the PayWizard e-wallet is now live on the Film4oD website. The e-wallet holds digital versions of credit/debit cards, the current balance, and various personal data. It facilitates continual card authorization for what PayWizard calls “true single-click purchases.”
  • Study: 41% of CNP Merchants Won’t Pass on Debit Savings - Sept. 6, 2011
    A Direct Response Forum survey recently found 41 percent of CNP merchants do not intend to pass on savings from lower debit card costs to customers. The survey, taken by attendees at the DRF’s annual conference in San Diego said 56 percent are unsure what steps they will take with the savings reaped from the Durbin Amendment. Results of the study even suggested a significant number of CNP merchants don’t even know what share of their sales revenue comes from debit transactions.
  • Payment Data Systems to Launch Remote Mobile Payment App for iPhone - Sept. 6, 2011
    San Antonio payments processor Payment Data Systems Inc. recently said it will develop and deploy a wireless mobile payments application branded as “iRemotePay.” The application initially will be deployed for the iPhone, iPad and iTouch with plans to implement for Android phones at a future date. The application, like the popular Square app, will include a card reader device for the iPhone that enables a merchant to process credit card and ACH payments over the wireless networks from remote locations and view these payment transactions while away from the office.
  • FAC Promotes Burns to CEO - Sept. 6, 2011
    Online payments processor First Atlantic Commerce (FAC) recently named Christopher Burns to the position of Chief Executive Officer and Ronnie Viera to Chief Operating Officer. Hamilton, Bermuda-based FAC said Burns, who worked in the U.K. prior to joining FAC seven years ago, has been promoted from his most recent post as senior vice president of business development, where he was responsible for all aspects of client relationship management, bank acquirer relationships and strategic partnerships.
  • PCI SSC Publishes Wireless Security Guidelines - Sept. 1, 2011
    The PCI Security Standards Council (PCI SSC) has published a guidance document aimed at providing organizations with the current PCI DSS considerations for implementing wireless technology securely in payments environments. The Wakefield, Mass.-based standards-setting body said PCI DSS Wireless Guidelines Information Supplement helps organizations understand how PCI DSS applies to wireless environments, how to limit the PCI DSS scope as it pertains to wireless and provides practical methods and concepts for deployment of secure wireless in payment card transaction environments.
  • PaymentOne Offers Direct Carrier Billing to German Mobile Operator - Sept. 1, 2011
    Carrier billing solutions provider PaymentOne Corporation said it has signed a direct carrier billing relationship with Telefónica Germany. Telefónica Germany is part of Madrid-based Telefónica SA, the second largest carrier group in the world. PaymentOne’s mpass system enables merchants to accept direct carrier billed payments for virtual, digital and physical goods.
