  • Community Bankers Push Back on Debit Interchange Proposal - Feb. 28, 2011
    After hearing from a national group representing merchants, community banks had their turn appealing to the Federal Reserve regarding its proposed rules to limit debit interchange, though the message unsurprisingly differed. While the National Retail Federation suggested to the Fed that it hadn’t gone nearly far enough in its efforts to roll back swipe fees on debit cards, the Independent Community Bankers of America suggested that if the proposal passed as written smaller banks would be forced to eliminate free checking, put the brakes on planned expansion and even lay workers off.
  • Android Users Bill Digital Purchases to Any Phone Number with PaymentOne - Feb. 28, 2011
    PaymentOne Corp., a provider of phone-enabled payments for landline, broadband, and mobile carrier billing, demonstrated its integrated mobile payment solution for Android at a recent trade show in Barcelona. The PayOne Android solution enables consumers to use any one of their phone numbers to securely pay for applications, in-game extras, and related digital services.
  • BilltoMobile Partners with Sprint for Mobile Payments - Feb. 28, 2011
    BilltoMobile, a provider of mobile payments for web purchases, recently announced a Direct Mobile Billing Gateway Service Provider agreement with Sprint that will enable Sprint customers to charge online purchases directly to their Sprint bill. Merchants and payment resellers using BilltoMobile's mobile payment service will be able to offer this payment option to Sprint customers in a few months.
  • TNS Launches Enhanced Gateway in British Isles - Feb. 25, 2011
    Transaction Network Services (TNS) is launching an enhanced version of its TNSPay gateway service the U.K. and Ireland. The gateway, formerly branded as CommsXL, is a leading multi-channel payment gateway service the company said has a strong reputation for security, reliability and availability.
  • Online Shoppers Can Pay Cash Online at Discover Network Merchants - Feb. 25, 2011
    eBillme, which enables consumers to pay cash for online purchases, announced that the payment option will now be available on the Discover Network through CardinalCommerce’s Centinel Universal Merchant Platform. Online merchants that accept Discover will now be able to attract the growing number of online shoppers who prefer to pay with cash.
  • Bernanke, Durbin at Odds over Interchange - Feb. 22, 2011
    The fight to regulate swipe fees heated up again last week when hearings were held in both the House and Senate to explore the consequences of the Federal Reserve’s proposed rules on the matter. The Fed’s proposal, which was mandated by the Durbin Amendment of the Dodd-Frank financial reform law passed last year, would cap the fees issuing banks could charge merchants for debit card transactions at 12 cents per transaction.
  • Visa Acquires Online Gaming Payments Provider for $190 Million - Feb. 22, 2011
    Visa Inc. has signed an agreement to acquire a Santa Clara, Calif.-based technology company specializing in monetizing digital content. PlaySpan Inc. enables users to purchase digital goods in online games, digital media and social networks and provides the PlaySpan Ultimate Game Card through more than 50,000 North American retail locations and in at least 12 other countries.
  • VeriFone Launches Second-Generation Mobile Payments Solution - Feb. 22, 2011
    VeriFone Systems, Inc. has launched the next generation of its PAYware Mobile Service for global markets. The most recent version of its software features VeriFone’s mobile payment solution and gateway service and brings international payment standards including NFC and EMV smart card, with PCI-compliant PIN keypad for Chip and PIN transactions, to popular smart phones.
  • MasterCard Rolls Out Display Card to U.S. Market - Feb. 17, 2011
    NagraID Security, MasterCard Worldwide and Symantec Corp. announced they have partnered to introduce the MasterCard Display Card in the U.S. For CNP merchants, the remote authentication functionality inherent in the display card facilitates secure remote online transactions by enabling cardholders to generate dynamic one-time “passwords” right on the card’s built-in display.
  • MRC Names Finalists for METAwards - Feb. 17, 2011
    The Merchant Risk Council (MRC), a merchant-led trade association announced recently the finalists for the 2011 MRC Emerging Technology Awards (METAwards) recognizing the most innovative payment, fraud and security tools in e-commerce. The finalists for this year’s award are: Acculynk, BOKU, Ethoca, iovation, Silver Tail Systems and Spriv.
  • Report: Mobile Transactions Exploding, but Consumers Still Unwilling to Pay - Feb. 17, 2011
    New research from Boston-based connectivity consultancy Yankee Group shows that, while mobile transaction usage is growing, consumers show little willingness to pay for these services. The company’s forecasts predict unprecedented growth in mobile transactions worldwide, with the total value of global mobile transactions increasing from $162 billion in 2010 to $984 billion in 2014. However, Yankee Group’s consumer survey results show that less than 10 percent of respondents would be willing to pay extra for mobile transaction services such as mobile banking, mobile coupons and mobile payments.
  • Report: Data Sharing Must Be in Real-Time to Prevent More Fraud - Feb. 14, 2011
    10 percent of the credit cards used to commit e-commerce fraud, were utilized at more than one merchant, according to a new study commissioned by anti-fraud collaborative Ethoca. In addition to that statistic, Fraud Attacks Across Industries reveals the frequency with which fraudsters strike multiple merchants, the speed at which fraudsters change attack paths, and surprising information on which industries are key targets.
  • Iovation Partners with Affirmative Technologies for Authentication - Feb. 14, 2011
    iovation, a Portland, Ore.-based online anti-fraud technology provider, recently announced a partnership with Affirmative Technologies, a technology provider offering a suite of electronic payment and risk management solutions to financial institutions, payment aggregators and third-party ACH processors. Affirmative Technologies will implement iovation fraud protection as a layer of security to authenticate web users before they enter sensitive areas of their clients’ websites.
  • cVidya Launches Mobile Payment and App Store Solutions - Feb. 11, 2011
    cVidya Networks, a London-based provider of “revenue intelligence” solutions, recently announced the launch of its revenue assurance and fraud management solutions for mobile payments and app stores. The company will showcase the two new products at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona starting on Valentine’s Day. The company said the mobile payment product addresses revenue leakages, credit-balance mismatch at the accounts level, reporting discrepancies, overpayments, lost transactions, inaccurate adjustments, as well as irregular or suspicious service activities such as fraud (both internal and external) and theft.
  • ProPay Launches M-Payment Platform at Sundance - Feb. 11, 2011
    ProPay, a credit card processing and electronic payment services provider, chose the Sundance Film Festival in Utah to launch its new social mobile payment platform. Provisionally named Zumogo, the mobile payment application facilitates payments and bi-directional communication between merchants and their consumers. The company said it enables businesses to efficiently market their products and improve operating efficiencies, while customers communicate with and make payments to businesses—all via smartphones.
  • First Data Pares Q4 Loss, Sees Bump in Revenue - Feb. 7, 2011
    Atlanta-based payments processor First Data Corporation reported fourth quarter revenue of $2.7 billion, up 6 percent compared to 2009. The company said revenue growth was primarily attributable to increases in debit network fees and merchant related services from the favorable impact of modest U.S. economic growth.
  • TNS Gateway Validated for PA DSS - Feb. 7, 2011
    Transaction Network Services (TNS) has achieved Payment Application Data Security Standard (PA DSS) validation for the point of sale payment client—a component of its TNSPay gateway solution. PA DSS is a software specific validation that sits within the PCI DSS compliance framework.
