Klarna, the Swedish payment provider that enables consumers to order online and pay later, said it has struck an agreement with American Express that will allow users to complete transactions using American Express cards. The company, which launched a U.S. division late last year and is now a payment option on Overstock.com, is focused on simplifying e-commerce and mobile online transactions by enabling one-touch purchases and often only requiring an email address or ZIP code as authentication.
The partnership will provide Klarna, which is trying to establish a toehold in the U.S., access to American Express cardholders in a market where most online transactions are performed using a credit card. By the same token, in parts of Europe where Klarna has a significant presence—notably Germany, where the company acquired the popular online payment provider SOFORT —consumers are more likely to use alternative payment methods. The partnership gives American Express the opportunity to reach online consumers in those countries.
