Cyber Monday Rocks for E-Commerce, Mobile

Nov. 29, 2012

Cyber Monday continues to be the busiest e-commerce shopping day of the year and online sales were up on Monday compared to last year, according to Chase Paymentech’s Chase Holiday Pulse. Sales on Cyber Monday rose nearly 22 percent on a year-over-year basis, the e-commerce processor said. The number of e-commerce transactions on Monday was nearly 47 percent higher than in 2011. Average ticket value continues to fall, however, with Chase Paymentech merchants reporting the average value of an individual purchase decreased 17 percent.

Mobile shopping continues to see a surge this year, according to activity reported by PayPal. The company said the payment volume on transactions completed via mobile devices on Cyber Monday rose 190 percent compared to the same day last year. Overall, PayPal saw 44 percent more payment volume on Monday than on Black Friday, according to PayPal Shopping Specialist Claudia Lombana.

“We all know that Cyber Monday is one of the top days for online shopping and that Mondays in general are traditionally the most popular day for online shopping,” said Lombana. “But, as more consumers access the Web through their mobile phones and devices, PayPal really saw mobile commerce spike on this key online shopping day.”
