Craigslist Competitor Hopes to differentiate with Online and Mobile Payment A classified-ad shopping app that has designs on unseating Craigslist is piloting a payment function reports say could differentiate it from other apps hoping to usurp the online classifieds pioneer. VarageSale is one of a growing number of apps attacking the mobile space in a way that Craigslist hasn’t (while the company does have a mobile Website, it does not have an app).

One of the pain points for Craigslist and other apps and sites in the online classifieds space is the inconvenience and security issues associated with making a cash payment to someone you have never met. VarageSale is providing users with digital wallets they can fund with a debit or credit card. While the company’s payment provider, Stripe, charges between two and three percent per transactions, the company is offering the service to users for free, according to a report in Re/code.

VarageSale is pilot testing the payments feature in Illinois, but expects to roll it out nationwide quickly.
