Airbnb Adds Alipay as Payment Option for Chinese Users

Airbnb, the popular vacation–lodgings rental service, has added Chinese online payment method Alipay as an option for its users in China, according to e-commerce giant Alibaba Group. In its corporate blog, Alipay’s former parent company, with whom it is still closely tied, said the move came as Airbnb tries to accommodate an increasing user base in China, most of whom do not have the international credit cards required to pay online at sites outside China.
“The tie-up will allow Chinese travelers to pay for their lodging in renminbi using their Alipay accounts while the owners overseas get paid in their home currencies through bank transfers,” the Alibaba post said. “Previously, Chinese travelers looking to book accommodation on Airbnb had to pay using international credit cards, something not many Chinese consumers have.”
The company said Chinese have traditionally traveled outside the country in large groups, but solo travel is a growing trend and many consumers in the country are using Airbnb for a “more experiential holiday.”
