Under the terms of a recent partnership, the more than 55,000 merchants that use e-commerce platform BigCommerce can now accept online payments via Visa Checkout. Like other digital wallets, Visa Checkout enables consumers to access stored credentials across multiple e-commerce Websites, streamlining the online checkout process and reducing cart abandonment. According to a press release, more than 28 million consumers have enrolled their payment cards in Visa Checkout.
Sam Shrauger, senior vice president of Digital Products at Visa said: “We are constantly looking for partners who also work towards our goal of convenient and secure payments, and BigCommerce’s commitment to empowering merchants to accept payments more rapidly is in lockstep with Visa’s vision for the future of e-commerce.”
While credit cards remain the king of online payment in the U.S., in other parts of the world—notably China, with Alipay and WeChat Pay—digital wallets are preeminent. As the share of e-commerce transactions that originate on smartphones continues to grow, merchants and consumers in the U.S. are beginning to follow suit. In fact, according to a recent study, digital wallets will be the dominant online payment method in every major region on earth except Latin America by 2021.
