Staples Could be Most Recent Breach Victim Staples, the Framingham, Mass.-based office supply retailing giant, has confirmed it is investigating a "potential issue involving credit-card data and has contacted law enforcement," according to published reports. Sources at various banks told security reporter Brian Krebs that a familiar pattern has emerged suggesting POS systems at Staples stores in Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey have been compromised. While the company has confirmed an investigation has been opened, it has not confirmed an actual breach.

"We take the protection of customer information very seriously, and are working to resolve the situation," said Mark Cautela, senior public relations manager at Staples. "If Staples discovers an issue, it is important to note that customers are not responsible for any fraudulent activity on their credit cards that is reported on [in] a timely basis."
