E-commerce platform and payment provider Shopify unveiled the newest way for Shopify merchants to utilize QR codes to make shopping on mobile devices easier. The new service, called Shopcodes, enables merchants to generate a QR code within the platform and display it on marketing messages, in physical stores or even on the product itself. When users scan the code with a QR reader on a mobile device (or, in the case of the most recent iOS release, within the native camera app) they are delivered right to a product page from which they can make a purchase. The codes also can send consumers directly to checkout. To begin generating the codes, Shopify store owners must download the free Shopcodes app.
“QR codes have evolved a lot since their invention in 1994 to their current position as a mechanism of mobile commerce, powered by Android and iPhone devices,” said Corey Pollock, product manager for Shopify. “Unlike traditional QR codes, they’re exclusively for shopping. Plus, each one is unique and trackable, so you can see where traffic and sales are coming from in your Shopify Analytics dashboard. [Once installed], you can start creating Shopcodes that direct customers to a product page or directly to checkout when scanned. You can even attach discounts to Shopcodes so customers can scan to save instantly.”
