Sam’s Club Offers Online Checkout and Payment in Stores to Remedy Long Lines
July 21, 2016
Leveraging online mobile checkout as a way to avoid long lines at cash registers in stores is not a new idea, but it has not seen much traction, especially as merchants turned their attention to integrating Apple Pay and other mobile wallets at the point of sale. But Sam’s Club has quietly introduced “line-busting” to its app at a recently opened store in Longmont, Colo. and one opening today in Columbia, S.C. In the press release announcing the opening in Columbia, Sam’s Club touted the technology as a “new club innovation.”
“The Columbia club will be one of the first Sam’s Clubs in the country to offer the convenience of Scan & Go shopping,” the statement said. “The mobile app makes members’ checkout process faster and more convenient by being able to scan UPC codes on items as they load them into their cart. When they are done shopping and ready to check out, they can pay directly on their phone from anywhere in the club and bypass the checkout line.”
Industry observers noted that wholesale clubs are uniquely suited to such a system because they already are checking shoppers’ purchases against receipts as they leave the store.
