Partnership Enables Isis Mobile Payments at the Pump

Aug. 2, 2012

Mobile payments company Isis this week disclosed that two top manufacturers of fuel pumps will begin integrating support for the joint venture’s mobile contactless payment capability into their equipment. Wayne and Gilbarco Veeder-Root will begin installing the pumps at selected retail fuel locations in Austin, Texas and Salt Lake City, Utah, where Isis will be rolling out its mobile payment solution first.

“The gas pump is one of the most frequented point-of-sale environments, and a critically important addition to the mobile commerce marketplace,” says Scott Mulloy, CTO of Isis. “[R]elationships with market leaders Wayne and Gilbarco Veeder-Root…[create] an important opportunity for convenience stores to enhance the customer experience, thereby increasing loyalty and in-store traffic.”

Isis has based its mobile payment solution on NFC technology that will enable consumers to tap their phones on a reader at the POS to make credit-card payments. After considerable hype in the media, however, the timeline for widespread adoption of NFC continues to be  pushed into the future .

Regardless of any delays, though, the pump manufacturers are believers in the technology, according to Paul de la Port, vice president of products for Wayne.

“Integrating the Isis SmartTap mobile commerce application will open entirely new payment, loyalty and promotional opportunities for consumers and fuel retailers using Wayne dispensers and technologies,” says de la Port. “We believe the simplicity and convenience of mobile commerce will have enormous appeal for consumers and retailers alike.”
