MasterCard to Launch Suite of Authentication Tools for Online Merchants
Oct. 8, 2015
MasterCard on Tuesday announced it will offer a suite of technology solutions designed so that online merchants can more easily authenticate consumers. The solutions, which will revolve around the mobile device and include biometric methods and SMS-delivered one-time passwords, will be available as MasterCard Identity Check to MasterCard issuing banks in the U.S. in mid-2016 and in other international markets in 2017. MasterCard is involved in several ongoing biometric pilots in the U.S. , Canada and the Netherlands. In a recent interview with CardNotPresent.com, MasterCard’s Senior Vice President of Product Strategy Bob Reany provided a glimpse of some of the biometric technologies that could be part of Identity Check.
“We’re not offering one kind of biometric. We know people have different preferences, so we’re offering different options using multiple types of biometrics,” said Reany. “Things that the phone can do with the high-resolution camera, like facial recognition with lightness detection and iris scanning. Every phone has a microphone, so we have voice recognition and some of the higher end phones have a fingerprint reader. We believe in all those things. The time is now. People are sick to death of forgetting their passwords and barriers to safety.”
