According to published reports, Instagram is planning a standalone shopping app. Tech publication The Verge reported this week that the Facebook-owned social media platform will spin off an app dedicated to shopping where Instagram users who follow specific merchants can browse and make purchases from those stores without leaving the app. The report did not discuss a timetable.
A source with insight into Facebook’s inner workings said the company could develop more tools for merchants on the app—which reports said could be called IG Shopping—to compete with “e-commerce platforms like Shopify.”
Users have been able to tag products they want within Instagram and begin a purchase, but they have not been able to do so without going to the merchant’s site. The company also has been testing payments within the parent app. A standalone shopping app could be the fruition of those developing technologies for Instagram.
