Along with the end-of-the-year holidays, Mother’s Day and Valentine’s Day, back-to-school is a traditional time to assess the health of retail. For online retailers overall, the news from this August and September is tepid, but mobile commerce is hot, according to retail search marketing company NetElixir. The company analyzed 80 million e-commerce sessions between the end of July and the first week in September and found e-commerce sales were up 3 percent from the same period last year. M-commerce, on the other hand, soared. The number of online orders originating on mobile devices grew 44 percent and revenue from those orders was up 64 percent.
“Every year, the spend on mobile just keeps accelerating and we can confidently say that mobile sales percentage contribution will continue to increase. People are getting more comfortable making purchases directly on mobile devices, which means retailers need to be prepared to convert consumers on mobile,” said Udayan Bose, CEO of NetElixir. “Since we started the holiday forecasts in 2008, we have observed a strong direct correlation between back-to-school sales data and holiday results. The year-on-year growth for the back-to-school season this year is very telling for what retailers can expect for the holidays.”
