Vending Machines to Take Mobile Payments

March 15, 2012

VendScreen, a Portland, Ore.-based startup, said it will launch its technology for vending machines that eventually will enable mobile payments next month at a Las Vegas trade show. The VendScreen device, which is Android-based and also connects wirelessly to the Internet, initially will enable customers to swipe a payment or loyalty card to pay for items. In the future, the company says the device will support payments from online accounts, mobile devices and QR codes.

The device, which can be installed in any existing vending machine, uses the “touch & swipe” user interface employed by smartphones, tablets and self-checkout counters in some stores. In addition to payments, the VendScreen device can be used to display advertising or nutritional information and to collect POS data.
