Target Latest Breach Victim
Dec. 19, 2013
According to published reports, the security network at retail juggernaut Target was hacked recently, potentially exposing the payment card information of millions of holiday shoppers. The intrusion, which began on Black Friday according to security watchdog Brian Krebs, was not acknowledged until today by Target. The extent of the breach remains unclear, but Target said the number of credit-card accounts potentially compromised could be as high as 47 million.
Target today confirmed the unauthorized intrusion happened between Nov. 27 and Dec. 15 and said in a statement the situation has been “identified and resolved.”
“Target’s first priority is preserving the trust of our guests and we have moved swiftly to address this issue, so guests can shop with confidence. We regret any inconvenience this may cause,” said Gregg Steinhafel, chairman, president and CEO of Target. “We take this matter very seriously and are working with law enforcement to bring those responsible to justice.”
