April 11, 2013

A Taiwanese publication is reporting that the country’s largest mobile operator is preparing to launch a mobile payment service. Chunghwa Telecom reportedly will introduce a mobile payment scheme that leverages QR codes at the point of sale. Chunghwa subscribers will be able to pay for goods and services at convenience stores, restaurants and in taxis. The report said the service will enable consumers to scan codes on TV screens to make purchases as well.

According to Joseph Kuo, managing director of the value-added services department at Chunghwa Telecom’s mobile business group, the service will be available to subscribers this June.
