Stripe Rolls Out Bitcoin Acceptance
Feb. 23, 2015
Stripe on Friday announced it is rolling out Bitcoin acceptance to its entire merchant base. Stripe has extended the same simple integration it brought to online merchants that want to accept credit cards to merchants that want to accept bitcoin. The company will charge merchants 0.5 percent per transaction and requires that merchants hold a U.S. bank account.
Stripe had been running a beta test for bitcoin acceptance for more than a year. In its explanation of how to get started accepting bitcoin the company posted on its Website, it highlighted one of the main reasons the cryptocurrency is attractive to merchants (besides low transactions costs): “Because the funds are already in the receiver when you create the charge, there’s no concept of a ‘decline’ the way there would be in credit cards.”
