RuPay Cards Now Accepted by E-Commerce Sites in India
June 24, 2013
India’s RuPay network has begun accepting e-commerce payments, according to reports. RuPay, which was launched with the backing of the Reserve Bank of India in March 2012, competes within the country with international payment card networks like Visa and MasterCard. Currently, the network accepts RuPay prepaid and debit cards issued by nine domestic banks at Indian ATMs and retail locations.
“Functionality across ATMs, credit-card point-of-sale terminals and over the Internet are the holy trinity of any electronic payment service,” said A.P. Hota, managing director and CEO of the National Payments Corporation of India, the organization responsible for the RuPay network. “Until now, the card could be used in ATMs and as a debit card only. Now, with the e-commerce platform also available, banks should have no reluctance in issuing RuPay cards.”
According to the reports, it’s not clear as to when NPCI enabled this service, but several Websites including Coke2home, JustRechargeIt and FutureBazaar have started accepting RuPay.
