Canadian telecommunications giant Rogers Communications this week unveiled a partnership it hopes will allay security concerns around contactless mobile payments. Rogers has tapped international digital security provider Gemalto for a solution to protect the secure element housing consumer payment data in NFC-enabled devices. Rogers announced in May that it would be part of a mobile wallet solution with Canadian financial institution CIBC.
“It’s essential that consumers have peace of mind when it comes to storing payment cards on their mobile device and using it to make credit and debit transactions on the go,” said David Robinson, vice president of emerging business for Rogers Communications. “Working with Gemalto allows us to protect the consumer’s information by leveraging the SIM card, assuring a secure and seamless experience for mobile payments.”
Rogers said it is deploying Gemalto’s UpTeq NFC to secure payment credentials stored on the high-end SIM for the mobile wallet it expects will launch in Canada later this year.
