Rogers, CIBC Deliver NFC Mobile Payments in Canada
Nov. 19, 2012
Months after Rogers Communications and CIBC announced an NFC-based mobile payments scheme in Canada, Rogers said Friday the app is available to consumers. The Suretap system leverages a SIM card, secured by Dutch chip maker Gemalto , in NFC-enabled handsets to allow consumers to make contactless purchases with their linked payment card by tapping their phones on a terminal at the point of sale.
Initially, Suretap is available only on the BlackBerry 9900, with the NFC-enabled BlackBerry 9360 on sale in a few weeks. Suretap-ready Android and Windows 8 devices will be available in 2013. Consumers can use Suretap at any merchant equipped with MasterCard PayPass or Visa PayWave contactless terminals.
