PayPal Launches Mobile Checkout
July 8, 2010
PayPal recently announced on its blog the launch of a mobile version of its Express Checkout service. Mobile Express Checkout enables merchants to offer PayPal payments to smartphone users around the world. While interest in mobile commerce is growing, merchants have encountered barriers to entry, according to Bill Zielke, senior director of merchant services at PayPal. “ We’ve had some great discussions with our merchants about mobile commerce and many of them have told us that while mobile is top of mind, getting into the game has proven difficult,” he said. “For years, retailers have been talking about the importance of a multichannel strategy. But, there’s never been a better time to get this up and running than today because consumers are shopping not only offline and online but now through their phones.” The service will enable payment by smartphone “without cumbersome data entry,” which the company said is important, especially on devices with small screens. Zielke disclosed that Mobile Express Checkout will initially be rolled out on the iPhone and Android in the next few weeks by several retailers including Nike and Buy.com. It will be rolled out to all PayPal retailers by the end of the summer.
