Online Retail Holiday Sales Maintain Strength
Dec. 15, 2011
Retail sales for the leading U.S. online merchants during the first six weeks of the holiday season (Nov. 1 to Dec. 14) are up 27 percent and transactions are up 38 percent, according to Chase Paymentech’s Cyber Holiday Pulse Index. “E-commerce retailers should be very happy to see that growth rates remain high, with sales increases holding around 27 percent since Thanksgiving,” said Mike Duffy, president of Chase Paymentech. “It’s even more impressive when you consider that the comparison is against what had been record volume weeks in 2010.” While total sales are up, average tickets remain down 8 percent, influenced by strong sales of digital media and lower cost electronics. The Cyber Holiday Pulse Index reports aggregated daily payment processing activity for 50 of the leading U.S. online retailers— measuring payment transactions, dollar volume and average ticket value. The data is taken directly from Chase Paymentech’s processing platform and updated every business day.
