PayPal to Launch Payment Method for Digital Goods - Oct. 28, 2010
At its Innovate 2010 developers conference in San Francisco this week, PayPal announced a version of its service that will be available soon for digital goods. The alternative payments provider said the new in-context, frictionless payment solution will enable consumers to pay for digital goods and content in as little as two clicks, without ever having to leave a publisher’s game, news, music, video or media site.
FAC Offers Authentication Service through European Firms - Oct. 28, 2010
First Atlantic Commerce (FAC), a Bermuda-based online payment gateway and fraud management company, recently announced it has implemented its 3-D Secure service with Allied Irish Bank Merchant Services (AIBMS), Elavon and Barclaycard. FAC is now certified to AIBMS, Elavon and Barclaycard for 3-D Secure Verified by Visa and MasterCard SecureCode.
SafetyPay Enables Micropayments for Online Gaming Industry - Oct. 28, 2010
SafetyPay, a Miami-based online payment facilitator, said it is now offering its online payment solution to the video gaming industry. The company said it enables merchants to accept micropayments without hurting their profits.
Report: Online Merchants Dropping the Ball on Alternative Payment Options - Oct. 25, 2010
Consumers are spending more online and more than half are paying using alternative payment options, according to a new report from payments consultancy Javelin Strategy & Research and Shop.org, the e-commerce division of the National Retail Federation. But while consumers show interest in alternative payment methods—such as PayPal, Bill Me Later, Checkout by Amazon, eBillme or Google Checkout—the report found only a third of online merchants offer those methods.
Holiday Online Spending to Rise Again - Oct. 25, 2010
Spending online will continue to increase this holiday season, according to research commissioned by online alternative payment company eBillme. The Rye Brook, N.Y. company’s quarterly Online Spending Index found that during the fourth quarter, consumers are planning to spend an average of $283.68 online, a 3 percent increase over Q4 2009.
3Q Results from PayPal and BillMeLater - Oct. 25, 2010
PayPal parent eBay announced financial results for the third quarter recently, as part of its earnings report. eBay's Payments segment, which includes BillMeLater in addition to PayPal, recorded revenue of $817.0 million for the quarter, a 22 percent increase from the same time period a year ago.
eWise Taps European Payments Vet for U.K. Expansion - Oct. 25, 2010
Online payments provider eWise has hired an industry veteran to establish a European division of the Denver-based company. John France, a former head of processing sales for Visa Europe, will lead a partnership with U.K.-based electronic payments company to provide a new, safer and more secure online payments solution to the U.K.
BlueCava Nets $5 Million in New Funding - Oct. 21, 2010
BlueCava, an Irvine, Calif.-based company that can identify any device connected to the Internet, announced this week it has tapped investors, including NBA owner and billionaire Mark Cuban, for $5 million in new funding. Cuban, an entrepreneur and Internet pioneer who founded and sold Broadcast.com, will join the company’s board of directors.
Cambridge Trust Offers SVP to Its Merchant Customers - Oct. 21, 2010
Cambridge Trust Company announced it has joined the Secure Vault Payments (SVP) network and now offers SVP to its merchant customers. SVP is a way to make payments or shop online by leveraging consumers’ online banking accounts to make immediate payments without sharing any account information.
ThreatMetrix Raises $12.1 Million in Series C Funding - Oct. 21, 2010
ThreatMetrix, a fraud prevention solutions provider for CNP merchants, announced recently it has secured $12.1 million in a third round of financing. Silicon Valley venture capital firm Tenaya Capital, formerly Lehman Brothers Ventures, led the round.
Visa Targets Online Fraud During National Cyber Security Awareness Month - Oct. 18, 2010
In recognition of National Cyber Security Awareness Month this October, Visa Inc. launched a Website to help cardholders and small businesses protect payment card account information, avoid payment card scams and resolve unauthorized use of their cards. Visa is providing cardholders practical tips at www.visasecuritysense.com in English and Spanish. Visa also joins the National Cyber Security Alliance’s “Stop. Think. Connect.” campaign to educate consumers about protecting themselves and their personal information online.
Failsafe Chooses SecurityMetrics for Compliance Services - Oct. 18, 2010
Failsafe Payments, a merchant service provider based in Cleveland, announced recently it has added PCI-DSS compliance services from SecurityMetrics to its payment gateway. The new compliance validation service joins Failsafe's merchant account program and Certo Payment Gateway, which the company said enables authentication and acceptance of multiple payment options and services for online transactions.
MRC and Mercator Partner for CNP Research - Oct. 18, 2010

Durbin Amendment Faces Constitutional Challenge - Oct. 14, 2010
A Minnesota bank this week filed a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of the Durbin Amendment, the measure added to the Wall St. financial reform package limiting swipe fees on debit cards that was signed into law by President Obama this summer. In its suit, the Wayzata, Minn.-based TCF National Bank charges that the amendment’s passage without debate violates the bank’s right to due process and that the exemption for financial institutions with less than $10 billion in assets denies TCF equal protection, also guaranteed under the Constitution.
PayPal to Unveil Micropayments Product at Annual Developers Conference - Oct. 14, 2010
PayPal, which announced in August that it is planning a product to enable consumers to make online micropayments without using payment cards (CNP Report Aug. 23, 2010), confirmed in published reports last week that it will formally launch the product at its annual developer’s conference, which begins on Oct. 26 in San Francisco.

Online Resources Corporation, a Chantilly, Va.-based provider of online financial services, recently announced low-cost option for public utilities that want to accept CNP payments from consumers using Visa cards. The company’s eCom Advantage suite of electronic billing solutions for payments, presentment and receivables, now offers utilities a program that allows for lower merchant discount rates for Visa payments made in a channel in which a convenience fee is not assessed.
U.S. CNP Fraud Stares at 32% Increase by Yearend - Oct. 12, 2010
Lingering unemployment—reaching nearly 10 percent in the U.S.—and the increasing ingenuity of thieves will contribute to a 32 percent increase in the number of fraudulent attempts to buy goods on the Internet, according to a new report from fraud prevention technology provider Retail Decisions (ReD). The U.K.-based company predicted online fraud will jump significantly by the end of this year.

M-Payments to Double in Asia Pacific by 2015 - Oct. 12, 2010
Mobile payments in Asia-Pacific are expected to reach $3.6 billion in the next five years, growing 15 percent a year from 2010 to 2015, according to Mountain View, Calif.-based management consulting firm Frost & Sullivan. The SMS method, which accounted for nearly 82 percent of total transactions in 2009, will likely remain the dominant mobile payment channel until 2015 when it will account for about 67 percent of m-payments.
