  • Task Force: Canada Lags Many in Mobile Payments - March 29, 2012
    The development of mobile payments in Canada lags behind many European countries, the developing economies of the BRIC bloc (Brazil, Russia, India and China) and “even Peru and Romania,” according to the final submissions from the Task Force for the Payments System Review.
  • Fed Survey Shows Consumers Still Wary of Mobile Payments - March 26, 2012
    In  Consumers and Mobile Financial Services  the Fed reports that just 12 percent of mobile phone owners have made a payment using their device in the last 12 months. Security remains the biggest issue, with 42 percent of consumers citing it as the biggest reason they do not use mobile payments. Security, however, is not the only obstacle providers must overcome.
  • Groupon Acquires Processor Comparison Site - March 26, 2012
    FeeFighters, a three-year-old company that helps small businesses compare credit card processors, has been acquired by daily-deals pioneer Groupon. In addition to a comparison tool helping merchants evaluate payments providers, FeeFighters also offers its own online payment gateway, called Samurai.
  • CardinalCommerce Secures Patents for Text-Based Mobile Payments - March 23, 2012
    The remote payments technology provider has secured a patent in Australia and additional protection on an application for patent in the U.S. for its mobile products and services. Specifically, the patents cover technology involving text-based mobile payments and communicating promotional and other information via text within mobile payment systems.
  • Venmo Emerges from Beta - March 23, 2012
    Backed by investment firms Accel, RRE, Greycroft, and Lerer Ventures, P2P mobile payments startup Venmo has been characterized as a competitor to Iowa-based Dwolla in that it facilitates transfers to and from users’ bank accounts, though users can link a credit or debit card to fund transactions.
  • NYC Solicits Bids for Mobile Payment App for Cabs - March 19, 2012
    The New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) on Friday issued a Request for Proposals for a smartphone app that will enable passengers to pay cab fares in city cabs via a mobile device. The TLC says its focus is payment, but is also “interested” in an app that delivers other capabilities including helping travelers locate available cabs, finding lost property or accessing customer service.
  • Forever21 Chooses Accertify for Fraud Prevention - March 19, 2012
    Anti-fraud company Accertify last week signed an agreement with clothing retailer Forever21 to provide Accertify’s fraud prevention solution. The Los Angeles-based clothing store, which operates 480 brick-and-mortar locations, says the agreement is a response to the risk involved in expanding its online presence internationally.
  • Simpler Name Reflects Need for Simpler Mobile Payments - March 15, 2012
    PaymentOne, a San Jose, Calif.-based mobile payments company, this week revealed that it has rebranded itself PayOne. The company says the simpler name and payment process signifies the simplicity consumers need to fully engage with mobile payments as smartphones and tablets become ubiquitous.
  • Vending Machines to Take Mobile Payments - March 15, 2012
    VendScreen, a Portland, Ore.-based startup, said it will launch its technology for vending machines that eventually will enable mobile payments next month at a Las Vegas trade show. The VendScreen device is Android-based, connects wirelessly to the Internet and will support payments from online accounts, mobile devices and QR codes in the future.
  • Merchants Push for Summary Judgment in Interchange Suit - March 12, 2012
    Several merchant groups and two retailers, which filed a lawsuit against the Federal Reserve Board in November claiming the agency didn’t follow the intent of the Dodd-Frank Act when it finalized rules implementing the Durbin Amendment to regulate debit interchange and network routing and exclusivity, now are seeking summary judgment to end the case before it reaches a courtroom.
  • Gamers Charge ‘Gold’ to Phone Bill with mopay - March 12, 2012
    Direct carrier biller mopay has been chosen by Wargaming.net as its alternative payment solution of choice. Users on Wargaming.net, an award-winning developer and publisher of popular massively multiplayer online (MMO) games, make in-game purchases of the virtual currency "Gold,” which they use to buy virtual goods like tanks or other weapons.
  • Apple Awarded Mobile Payments Patent - March 8, 2012
    The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office this week approved a patent application by Apple concerning the rules governing financial transactions by a subsidiary mobile payment account. That is, the company has patented the process by which a parent with a primary account might have control over the way a child, holding a secondary account, uses their mobile device to make payments.
  • Restaurant ‘Linebuster’ App Adds PayPal as Payment Option - March 8, 2012
    Tabbedout, a mobile app that enables consumers to pay restaurant or bar tabs without handing their payment card to a server, has added PayPal as a payment option. Scott Dunlap, PayPal’s vice president of emerging opportunities, confirmed in a blog post that PayPal will be featured this week during SXSW in Austin, Texas.
  • U.K. CNP Fraud Edges Down - March 8, 2012
    Card-not-present fraud in the U.K. fell three percent in 2011 compared to the year before, according to a report yesterday by the U.K. Cards Association. While fraud on CNP transactions has dropped in the country every year since 2008, it remains the largest contributor to the overall total, accounting for nearly £221 million ($348 million) of the £341 million ($537 million) lost to card fraud last year.
  • New CNP Expo Website Features Updated Agenda - March 8, 2012
    In addition to the list of expert panelists who will take the stage during the CNP Expo's educational sessions and a complete bio of keynote speaker Daymond John, the new site features an updated agenda that now includes two general sessions: a vendor roundtable discussion on choosing a fraud-screening solution and a panel on the challenges of taking CNP payments in emerging markets.

  • UnionPay Chooses WorldPay to Enable Online Merchants to Sell in China - March 6, 2012
    WorldPay, the London-based payment processor, has partnered with China UnionPay to become the Chinese card issuer’s biggest acquirer outside of China for e-commerce UnionPay transactions. The agreement calls for WorldPay become the first UnionPay online payment acquirer in the U.S. and most of Europe and will enable merchants to sell directly to consumers in China and UnionPay cardholders outside of China.
  • Vantage Clients Tap ControlScan for Fully Managed PCI Compliance - March 6, 2012
    Vantage Card Services, an Atlanta-based payment processor, has expanded its relationship with compliance solutions provider ControlScan. Vantage says it has advocated for years the need for a strong security posture, which includes compliance with the requirements advanced by the PCI Council in its Data Security Standard.
  • Murphy Joins CardNotPresent.com - March 2, 2012
    CardNotPresent.com is pleased to announce that D.J. Murphy has joined the staff as editor-in-chief. He will have day-to-day control of the editorial content on the Website and will serve as the main reporter and writer for CNP.com. Murphy comes to the company from Paybefore—a family of primarily electronic publications focused on the prepaid card industry—where he wrote, edited and produced its most-read publication, Paybefore News and created its non-U.S. counterpart Paybefore News International.
  • Chase Invests in GoPago - March 2, 2012
    JPMorgan Chase & Co. has invested an undisclosed amount in GoPago, Inc., a Mountain View, Calif.-based provider of technology that enables consumers to pay in-store for products using a mobile device without standing in line. Chase said its investment, in the form of GoPago’s Series A preferred stock, will enable brick and mortar businesses to leverage mobile to better compete with online businesses.
  • Global Payments Launches Developer Portal - March 2, 2012
    Atlanta-based payments processor Global Payments Inc. has launched a portal for third party developers where they can access the tools they need to enable payment processing via Global Payments. The company said The Global Payments Developer Portal will support development for a multitude of platforms including mobile apps, e-commerce Web sites and retail systems.
  • GlobalCollect Acquires Latin American E-Commerce Processor - March 2, 2012
    Dutch CNP processor GlobalCollect has agreed to acquire Sub1, a Buenos Aires-based e-commerce processor. The Argentinean firm boasts a 70 percent market share in its home country and says it is growing in the rest of the Latin America. The acquisition will enable GlobalCollect to expand in a region it has identified as strategically important.
