eBay Acquires Purchase-on-Invoice Biller for German PayPal Users - Dec. 27, 2011
E-commerce giant eBay Inc. announced that it has acquired BillSAFE, a leading provider of purchase-on-invoice technology based in Germany. The deal follows eBay’s minority stake investment in the company in October 2010 and the company said it will integrate the biller’s technology in its PayPal unit, which serves more than 15 million accounts in Germany.
Consumer Group: Direct-Carrier Billing Lacks Consumer Protections - Dec. 27, 2011
Consumers Union, the San Francisco-based consumer watchdog group that publishes Consumer Reports magazine, recently targeted direct-carrier billing for online purchases as a mobile payment method that lacks protections for consumers. The advocacy group urged top wireless carriers to strengthen their contracts to protect consumers in the event that their phone is lost or stolen or if a merchant makes a billing mistake or the customer is not satisfied with a purchase.
Indian Insurer Chooses BillDesk for Online Payments - Dec. 27, 2011
Aviva Life Insurance’s India unit recently announced that it has extended its relationship with online payment services platform BillDesk. The insurance company said the platform, provided by IndiaIdeas.com Limited, enables Aviva customers to pay their premium through 49 banks on Net banking from the earlier 8-9 banks.
Fandango Adds PayPal as Mobile Payment Option - Dec. 22, 2011
Fandango, the online movie ticket seller, has added PayPal as a payment option to its iPhone and Android mobile ticketing app. "We first offered PayPal as a payment option on the Web, and we're now pleased to extend it to mobile," says Rick Butler, Fandango Executive Vice President and General Manager. "More than 20 percent of Fandango's ticket sales come from mobile devices and PayPal will offer an additional safe, easy and fast payment method for our moviegoers on the go."
mopay Add Broadband Billing to Lineup - Dec. 22, 2011
mopay, a provider of direct carrier billing solutions for online payment, has extended its solution to include broadband billing. The Palo Alto, Calif.-based company said the new alternative billing channel, available on the mopay payments platform, enables online merchants to charge purchases directly to consumers’ Internet service provider accounts.
Digital River Introduces B2B E-Commerce Solution - Dec. 22, 2011
Global e-commerce solutions provider Digital River Inc. has launched an enhanced B2B offering that enables companies to create what it calls best-in-class online purchase experiences for their business buyers. The Minneapolis-based company said its global cloud-based solution enables physical and digital goods merchants to sell directly to business buyers by tailoring their e-commerce services and using authenticated portals, segmented pricing, preferred payment methods, private reseller networks and other B2B tactics.

White Paper: Where the PCI Council Got It Wrong on Tokenization - Dec. 19, 2011
Prime Factors, a Eugene, Ore.-based data security company, recently responded to the August publication of the PCI DSS Tokenization Guide with a white paper of its own that attempted to address what it calls the shortcomings of the PCI document. Tokenization Guidance: How to Reduce PCI Compliance Costs, licensed by Prime Factors and completed by research firm Securosis, said the PCI Tokenization Guidance doesn’t answer the central question it purports to examine: How does tokenization alter PCI compliance?
Dwolla Launches Line of Credit - Dec. 19, 2011
Dwolla, an online and mobile payment platform that enables merchants to reduce the per transactions fees they pay, announced a new feature that gives consumers who use the payment method access to a $500 credit line. Prior to the release of Instant, the company said users could only initiate an immediate transfer of funds if they had money in their Dwolla account.

Zipmark, a mobile and online payment provider based in New York City, has secured $2 million in seed funding led by Village Ventures and Contour Venture Partners and supported by NYC Seed, High Peaks Venture Capital and the New York City Investment Fund.
First Data Launches Payment Gateway - Dec. 15, 2011
First Data Corporation this week introduced an online payment gateway it said offers a safe and reliable solution for card not present transactions and will enable merchants to expand payment acceptance globally. The Atlanta-based processor said the new gateway gives merchants a broader set of processing capabilities, a more intuitive user-interface, greater reporting capabilities and simplified integration, documentation and processes.
Online Retail Holiday Sales Maintain Strength - Dec. 15, 2011
Retail sales for the leading U.S. online merchants during the first six weeks of the holiday season (Nov. 1 to Dec. 14) are up 27 percent and transactions are up 38 percent, according to Chase Paymentech’s Cyber Holiday Pulse Index. “E-commerce retailers should be very happy to see that growth rates remain high, with sales increases holding around 27 percent since Thanksgiving,” said Mike Duffy, president of Chase Paymentech.
Report: Consumers Seeking Safer Online Alternative, Direct-Carrier Billing Tops Alternatives - Dec. 15, 2011
Eighty percent of consumers would spend more online if offered an easier and more secure way to pay, according to a new survey from Javelin Strategy & Research and PaymentOne. The survey also found that by a margin of almost 4 to 1, consumers believe direct carrier-billed mobile payments are more secure than using credit and debit cards for online digital purchases.
Former Safaricom CEO to Lead Vodafone M-Payments Business - Dec. 12, 2011
Michael Joseph has been named to lead the mobile payments unit of London-based telecom Vodafone. Joseph is the former CEO of Safaricom who is credited with championing mobile payment service M-PESA (a joint venture of Vodafone and Safaricom) in Kenya. M-PESA, one of the most successful mobile initiatives in the world, has helped Kenya leapfrog a stage of development and kickstart its rural economy.
Online Biller Nets $15.5 Million in New Financing - Dec. 12, 2011
Bill.com, a Palo Alto, Calf.-based integrated bill payment, online invoicing and cash management solutions provider, recently completed a $15.5 million Series D funding round. The most recent round included new investor Financial Partners Fund (FPF), a unit of Citi Capital Advisors, and existing Bill.com investors including DCM, Emergence Capital Partners, August Capital, Jafco Ventures and Total Technology Ventures.
Giropay Chosen for DHL Checkout - Dec. 12, 2011
DHL Checkout customers now can make their online purchases with giropay. The German online payment service joins a number of other payment options available at DHL Checkout, the order processing solution from Deutsche Post DHL that is not only integrated into its own online shopping portal—MeinPaket.de—but also can be integrated into any Web shop.
Fed, SRPc Call for Remote Payment Standards, Central Authority - Dec. 8, 2011
In its December letter, the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago reported on a September meeting it hosted with the Secure Remote Payments Council (SRPc) to discuss strategies to reduce payments fraud in e-commerce and m-commerce environments. Participants called for more standards and centralized authority.
25% of Consumers Globally Make Purchases with Mobile Devices - Dec. 8, 2011
Consumers are increasingly willing to share personal data with advertisers, but remain concerned over the security of mobile payments, according to a new report by international management consultancy KPMG. In The Converged Lifestyle, the company also found PayPal has become preferred over credit cards as an online payment method in Europe and the Middle East.
CNP Credit Card Fraud Surges in South Africa - Dec. 8, 2011
Credit card fraud in South Africa increased by just over half this year, and fraudulent CNP transactions are gaining momentum in the country. The South African Banking Risk Information Centre (Sabric) said the banking sector's loss from credit card fraud rose 53 percent for the fiscal year ending September 2011.
Consortium Lobbies for PIN Debit Standard - Dec. 5, 2011
Acculynk, an Atlanta-based online authentication company, said recently it has formed the International Internet PIN Acceptance Consortium for the purpose of enabling secure Internet payments across international borders. The company hopes the consortium can establish Acculynk’s PaySecure as the standard for processing Internet PIN-debit transactions internationally by collaborating with networks and financial institutions to develop solutions necessary to ensure full compatibility across multiple markets.
Chase Paymentech: Black Friday and Cyber Monday Online Sales up 24% -
E-commerce payments processor Chase Paymentech said online sales over the first big weekend of the holiday shopping season were up 24 percent over the same period a year ago. The company’s Cyber Holiday Pulse Index found that during the weekend, including Black Friday and Cyber Monday, transactions for the top 50 Internet retailers rose 36 percent compared to 2010.

Recurly, Inc., a San Francisco-based subscription billing service provider, has released a payment gateway designed specifically for recurring billing. The company said the payment gateway enables organizations that provide services on a subscription basis to access subscriber renewal management capabilities and credit card error optimization achieved in the past only by expensive custom-built systems.
ModusLink Expands Roster of Payment Providers for E-Commerce Clients - Dec. 5, 2011
ModusLink Global Solutions Inc., a company that designs and executes value chain strategies for technology and consumer goods companies, has signed new and expanded payment service agreements with Citibank Japan, Alipay and PayPal. The Waltham, Mass.-based company said the addition of Citibank Japan and Alipay as integrated payment providers for ModusLink’s e-commerce solution and the expansion of PayPal services globally, broadens the number of consumers its clients can sell to online.
Report: Credit Cards Regaining Share in Online Payments - Dec. 1, 2011
A significant shift in the regulatory environment in the payments industry will result in a migration back toward credit cards from debit for online payments, according to a new report from California consultancy Javelin Strategy & Research. In its 4th Annual Online Retail Payments Forecast 2011-2016: New Regulations Leave Credit Poised for a Comeback Javelin projects—assuming the Durbin Amendment stands as currently implemented—that total payments volume (TPV) for the online use of credit cards by U.S. consumers will climb 63 percent in the next five years, while the TPV for debit cards is expected to rise just 2 percent during that same period.
SafetyPay Added as Payment Option for Facebook Credits - Dec. 1, 2011
Miami-based online payments provider SafetyPay said it has been added as a payment option for Facebook Credits. Starting next week, consumers in Mexico, Costa Rica, Peru, Spain, Canada, United States, Austria, Germany and Brazil can purchase Facebook Credits online using SafetyPay. The payment method works by transferring funds from a customer’s bank account in their local currency without disclosing any personal financial information.
WorldPay Names VP of Global Marketing - Dec. 1, 2011
London-based e-commerce processor WorldPay has appointed Charlotte Speller as vice president of Global Marketing, for the e-commerce division of the business. Most recently Speller served as head of marketing and PR for Sage Pay.
