Miami is the most dangerous city in the U.S. for e-commerce merchants, according to a new report from Experian. The fraud prevention group of the Dublin-based company identified the 100 riskiest ZIP codes in the U.S. from both a billing and shipping perspective and Miami ZIP codes littered the top of both lists. Miami ZIP codes showed up in the billing address of nine of the top 30 locations with the highest e-commerce fraud attack rates and in the shipping address of five of the top 15 (and three of the top four). Florida, California and New York accounted for 44 percent of the riskiest billing ZIPs and 52 percent of the riskiest shipping ZIPs.
The riskiest single shipping ZIP code, according to Experian? Eudora, Kan., a suburb of the university city of Lawrence about halfway between Kansas City and Topeka. A Houston ZIP code took the top spot for riskiest billing location. All of this, Experian noted, is against the backdrop of a 15 percent year-over-year increase in the total fraud attack rate in the U.S.
“Fraudsters continue to exploit new vulnerabilities, and perpetrate card-not-present fraud against businesses using stolen consumer identity and payment data,” said Adam Fingersh, Experian general manager and senior vice president of Fraud and Identity Solutions. “This reinforces the need for aggressive fraud prevention strategies and adoption of open technology platforms to prepare for the latest emerging cyber security threats. Fraudsters have what they need to quickly capitalize on compromised data, so businesses need to be prepared.”
