Marcus Named PayPal President

eBay CEO John Donohoe revealed late last week that the company has chosen David Marcus to lead its PayPal unit. Marcus replaces Scott Thompson, who left PayPal in January to become CEO of Yahoo Inc. Marcus joined PayPal as vice president of mobile when eBay acquired Zong last summer. He officially takes the reins of the online payments pioneer today.

In a post on PayPal’s corporate blog, Donohoe praised Marcus for his “founder’s perspective,” developed building the direct carrier billing startup Zong. Donohoe says Marcus will “bring start-up energy” to PayPal, noting his leadership in recently bringing PayPal Here to market .

“With David at the helm,” Donohoe writes, “we’ll continue to focus on accelerating product innovation, driving consumer engagement and creating a world where paying anytime, anywhere and any way is synonymous with PayPal.”
