Malaysia Airlines Adds PayPal for Mobile Bookings
July 9, 2012
Malaysia’s national airline has partnered with PayPal to enable consumers to pay for airfare via mobile device. The airline now accepts PayPal for flights booked using its MHmobile app and the flymas.mobi mobile site from anywhere in the world. The airline said it needed to expand its mobile payment options and wanted to make it even simpler to pay after it saw a five-fold increase in average daily bookings originating from the mobile app in 2011.
PayPal noted in its Mobile Shopping Insights 2011 study that mobile commerce in Malaysia grew from MYR101 million ($32 million) in 2010 to MYR467 million ($147 million) in 2011. The alternative payment provider projects the Malaysian mobile commerce market to reach MYR3.43 billion ($1.1 billion) by 2015. The PayPal study also noted that airline ticketing was in the top five mobile shopping categories in 2011 with Malaysians spending MYR32 million ($10 million) via mobile devices during that year and that airline ticket booking is a top three category for future purchases on smartphones.
