RuPay, the Indian debit-card scheme overseen by the Reserve Bank of India, has partnered with several of the country’s largest e-commerce merchants, which have agreed to accept the growing payment method for online transactions. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which maintains the network for the government, said IRCTC (the Indian rail system), Life Insurance Corporation (LIC), Flipkart, Snapdeal, BookMyShow and Homeshop18 have joined the more than 15,000 other merchants in India that accept RuPay.
“Acceptance on large merchants like IRCTC, LIC, Flipkart, Homeshop18, Snapdeal and BookMyShow among others marks an important milestone for RuPay e-commerce,” said A.P. Hota, managing director and CEO of NPCI. “Today, 30 million RuPay cards have already been issued in the country. RuPay cards today are enabled at all ATMs across the country and over 15,000 online merchants. RuPay card holders can now shop on top e-tailers in the country, pay their bills as well as book travel tickets online. It is our vision to touch every Indian with at least one payment mode of NPCI by 2020.”
