Global Payments Widens Breach Investigation

Atlanta-based processor Global Payments, which disclosed in late March it had experienced a security breach that exposed the credit card information of 1.5 million consumers, last week acknowledged the intrusion has affected other parts of its system not originally thought to be compromised. In addition to consumers, Global Payments now believes information from some of its merchant clients may have been exposed, though the number of credit card accounts at risk remains the same.

“The company’s ongoing investigation recently revealed potential unauthorized access to servers containing personal information collected from a subset of merchant applicants,” Global Payments said in a statement. “It is unclear whether the intruders looked at or took any personal information from the company’s systems; however, the company will notify potentially-affected individuals in the coming days. The notifications are unrelated to cardholder data and pertain to individuals associated with a subset of the company’s U.S. merchant applicants.”
