Federal Appeals Court Upholds Patent Decision in Favor of Retail Decisions

Aug. 30, 2011

The United States Court of Appeals upheld the summary judgment of the Northern District Court of California invalidating patent infringement claims by CyberSource against Retail Decisions regarding U.S. Patent No. 6,029,154. In March 2009, the District Court found the patent, which relates to processes for detecting fraud in online payment card transactions, failed several legal standards covering unpatentable mental processes. The Federal Circuit’s Aug. 16 decision affirmed the lower court decision finding Retail Decisions is not in violation of the CyberSource patent. CyberSource initiated the lawsuit in 2004.
