Facebook Rolls Out Direct Carrier Billing for Mobile In-App Purchases

Facebook yesterday started to roll out a new payment flow for in-app purchases made via mobile device that reduce the number of steps required from seven to two, according to a post on the social networking giant’s developers blog. The system leverages direct carrier billing in the U.S., U.K. and 60 other countries, the company said in the blog post. Earlier this year, Facebook announced it had partnered with U.K.-based direct carrier billing technology provider Bango.

“The payments experience is just broken for end users,” Facebook CTO Bret Taylor said in February. At the time, Taylor said the company was working on “partnerships with operators to improve the user and developer experience around operator billing that will eliminate the SMS verification for vast majority of customers.”

Subsequently, Facebook disclosed it was working with global MNOs like AT&T, Deutsche Telekom, Orange, Telefónica, T-Mobile USA, Verizon, Vodafone, KDDI and SOFTBANK MOBILE Corp. to address the problem. While many of those operators are now supporting carrier billing for Facebook apps, however, Verizon is not currently on board.
