Dwolla Reveals Celebrity Investor
April 19, 2012
Des Moines, Iowa-based startup payment network Dwolla, which secured $5 million in Series B funding in February, revealed recently that actor Ashton Kutcher participated in the round as an investor and will be involved in efforts to market the service. Dwolla CEO Ben Milne and Kutcher appeared together on PrairieCast, a Web video series produced by Iowa- and Nebraska-focused tech blog Silicon Prairie.
In the hour-long interview , Milne calls Iowa-born Kutcher a “brilliant” investor who will bring fresh perspective to the product. Kutcher is equally bullish about Dwolla and its disruptive potential in online and mobile payments.
“There are so many people vying for the space, and there are a lot of MSPs (merchant service providers) that are doing it, from Square to PayPal to this one to that one,” the Two and a Half Men star says in the interview. “And you can’t confuse Dwolla with that, because those MSPs are still relying on credit card companies. When you really start to look at holistic solutions, it’s Dwolla,” Kutcher said. “And people are gonna see it. And, listen, it’s pretty frickin’ cool.”
