Discover Merchants to Accept PayPal at POS
Aug. 23, 2012
PayPal yesterday revealed that it has partnered with Discover to enable account holders to pay with PayPal at retail stores. Starting in 2013, PayPal account holders can pay with PayPal at any retail store that accepts Discover. PayPal, which began its foray into the brick-and-mortar environment with Home Depot in February and has added 15 more national retailers since, enables acceptance at the POS by keying in a user’s mobile number and PIN, by swiping a PayPal payment card linked to an account or, eventually, tapping an NFC-enabled phone. Don Kingsborough, vice president of retail and prepaid products, said on the company’s blog that there is no need for Discover merchants to change their POS systems to accept PayPal.
“This relationship quickly extends PayPal’s reach to millions of merchant locations nationwide and is a milestone moment for us that will create new benefits for Discover merchants without requiring new hardware or software,” Kingsborough said. “This relationship will deliver a truly seamless digital wallet, available most places consumers shop offline, which offers the speed, simplicity and security already enjoyed by 113 million active PayPal customers online.”
