Carrefour Re-Enters E-Commerce, Focuses on Brazil Carrefour, the world’s second-largest retailer, stunned many in 2012 when it abandoned e-commerce, but on Tuesday, the company told shareholders and analysts it will re-enter the space. At Carrefour’s annual shareholders meeting in Paris, CEO Georges Plassat informed the audience it would commit to rebuilding its e-commerce business.

Plassat also said Carrefour would work on building its physical presence in Brazil, which is the company’s second-largest market after France. E-commerce and brick-and-mortar will have to go hand-in-hand in Brazil, Plassat said at the meeting, for Carrefour to gain ground against French rival Casino Guichard-Perrachon SA. Casino owns Brazil’s largest retailer Grupo Pao de Acucar and Nova Pontocom, its leading online retail business.
