BitPay Responds to European Growth with New Headquarters

Sept. 11, 2014

BitPay Responds to European Growth with New Headquarters BitPay, the Atlanta-based bitcoin processing company, has signed up so many European merchants in the last three months it has outgrown its headquarters there. And, in a move that is perhaps partly symbolic, the company chose for its new European base a historic building complex in Amsterdam that used to house some of the most traditional financial institutions in the world. BitPay said its merchants have processed €28 million ($36.2 million) this year, up 1,900 percent from €1.4 million ($1.8 million) processed during the same month last year. BitPay’s European merchant base has grown to more than 11,000, according to Moe Levin, director of European business development for BitPay.

"In May when we first opened the office, we were adding about 200 merchants monthly, and for the month of August we added 1,100 new merchants in Europe," said Levin. "Europeans are familiar with multiple currencies and are at the forefront of mobile-technology adoption, so it’s easy to see why bitcoin is popular and widely used."
