Amex Launches Virtual Gift Card for Online Shopping
Sept. 12, 2011
American Express recently launched a digital version of its popular gift card specifically designed for e-commerce environments. The American Express eGift Card, to be purchased and used online, employs the same no-post-purchase fee structure featured in the traditional gift card program. “As consumers spend more time shopping online, we saw a need for a virtual gifting product,” said Stefan Happ, senior vice president and general manager of the Americas for American Express’ Global Payment Options. “We took the best of our successful Gift Card program and made it available as a virtual product, the American Express eGift Card, thus satisfying a growing need among consumers. It’s also ideal for those last-minute shoppers and for loved ones, friends and family who don’t live nearby as there’s no shipping and it arrives in the recipient’s inbox in minutes.” The virtual gift card is available for purchase at the Amex Website and can be redeemed online or via telephone at any retailer that accepts American Express. Online shoppers can choose the card in any denomination from $25 to $200 (along with a $2.95 purchase price) and the card number is emailed to the recipient’s email inbox.
