Amazon Acquires GoPago
Dec. 19, 2013
While Amazon has been mum on the subject, an executive of GoPago told an Italian newspaper the mobile payments company has been acquired by the e-commerce giant. Acquiring GoPago, a San Francisco based company that makes mobile POS systems, could result in Amazon Payments enabling consumers to use their Amazon account to pay for products in stores.
Vincenzo Di Nicola, GoPago’s co-founder and CTO, revealed the acquisition this week to La Repubblica. GoPago’s technology could enable Amazon to compete with Square, PayPal and others. Some observers also have said the deal will enable Amazon to “close the loop” from advertising through purchase.
Amazon has not commented on the acquisition publicly, nor did it respond to requests for confirmation from CardNotPresent.com, so terms of the deal remain undisclosed.
