Alipay Mobile Posts 546% Growth

Alipay.com, China’s answer to PayPal, said its mobile service experienced a 546 percent growth in transactions during 2012. The number of people who used Alipay on a mobile device last year increased by 223 percent compared with 2011. The company said 4.3 million people in China spent more using mobile devices than they did on PCs.
Consumers in the Tibetan cities of Lhasa and Nyingchi are the biggest users of the mobile service as compared to Alipay’s traditional online service. In fact, the company reported that the heaviest users of its mobile services disproportionately are located in rural and Western cities away from major population centers like Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong. Alipay attributed the phenomenon to the popularity of mobile phones in small cities, where their penetration is much higher than PCs and the penetration of mobile Internet is higher than broadband.
